1 - Why does the clock in the bar always say five-past-three?

The clock has been stopped at 03:06pm. This was the time at which play was stopped by the referee on the day of the Hillsborough disaster, 15th April 1989.

2 - Why won't Shankly's allow 'The Sun' newspaper to be read in the bar?

After the Hillsborough disaster 'The Sun' printed some unforgivable headlines about the supporters. The editor of the paper (at the time), Kelvin MacKenzie gave the 'go ahead' to print 'THE TRUTH' about what happened, saying: - Liverpool fans were pick-pocketing the dead!
- Liverpool fans urinated on helping Policemen!
- Drunken fans viciously attacked rescue workers and Police!
- Drunken hooligans, without tickets were to blame for the deaths.
- Centre-spread photos of crushed victims with captions saying “...it was their own fault...”.

Before printing went ahead, MacKenzie sought confirmation of the above with the M.P Irvine Patnick; he said that it was because he had had it confirmed by the senior duty Police Officer at the match, namely, DCS David Duckenfield. MacKenzie half-heartedly apologised 'in print' in 1993. However, in November 2006 he revealed that he only did so because the newspapers owner, Rupert Murdoch, ordered him to. MacKenzie quoted on BBC's 'Question Time' in January 2007 when asked to apologise again, “I was not sorry then and I'm not sorry now for the papers coverage.” Because of one man's arrogance and refusal to listen to his staff, people in Liverpool (Evertonians included) do not even read let alone buy 'The Sun' tabloid.

Shankly's is a pub. Also, it is surrounded by 'eating houses', we have 2 British restaurants, an Indian, and a Burgerking opposite, with Spanish, Italian and more just around the corner.
