“You'll Never Walk Alone” was written by Rogers and Hammerstein for the 1945 Broadway musical 'Carousel'.

Gerry Marsden and The Pacemakers released the song in 1963 and it was an immediate hit, reaching the number one spot. A massive achievement considering the likes of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones were by then world famous. As the Kop was finding its voice at the time, it easily and readily related to the 'Mersybeat' tunes. It was a crowd favorite, and so it stuck.

Today, Gerry Marsden has proudly disowned the song, saying 'Shankly said that 'it's Liverpools song' so ....it's Liverpool's song'.

When you walk through a storm
Hold your head up high
And don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
Is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone
You'll never walk alone

Shankly's is not a themed bar ... it's much more important than that.
